State Street: Brian Porter Elected To Board of Directors

State Street has announced that Brian Porter has been elected to its Board of Directors. Porter brings more than four decades of experience in banking and institutional client services, with expertise spanning international banking, risk management, corporate banking, and capital markets.

Porter is best known for his tenure as President and Chief Executive Officer of The Bank of Nova Scotia (Scotiabank), where he oversaw a period of significant growth and global expansion. By the end of his leadership, Scotiabank had become Canada’s third-largest bank by assets, reporting revenues of nearly CAD 32.3 billion. His time as CEO was marked by advances in innovation and customer service, with a strong focus on using technology to improve efficiency and enhance the client experience.

Before becoming CEO, Porter served as Group Head of International Banking, managing Scotiabank’s operations for personal, small business, and commercial banking in more than 50 countries. He also held several other senior roles at the bank, including Group Head of Risk and Treasury, Chief Risk Officer, and Head of Global Banking and Markets. His career began in 1981 at investment dealer McLeod Young Weir, which was later acquired by Scotiabank in 1988.

Porter holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Dalhousie University and has been awarded honorary Doctor of Laws degrees from both Dalhousie University and Toronto Metropolitan University. He currently serves on the boards of Emera, a Canadian electric utility, and Fairfax Financial, a Canadian insurance company. In addition, he is Chair of the Board of Governors at Huron University College at Western University and Chair of the Board of the Atlantic Salmon Federation in Canada.

His appointment to State Street’s board adds a seasoned leader with deep global banking experience, further strengthening the company’s governance and strategic insight.
