Sullivan & Cromwell added Michael R. Huston, Jonathan Y. Ellis, and Nicholas S. Crown as partners in its Supreme Court & Appellate Practice in Washington, D.C. Huston and Ellis will serve as co-heads of the practice.
All three lawyers previously served as Assistants to the Solicitor General of the United States, and collectively they have argued more than 20 cases before the U.S. Supreme Court.
Huston has argued 12 Supreme Court cases and has handled major appellate matters involving administrative law, intellectual property, constitutional law, ERISA, jurisdiction, and civil procedure.
His recent work includes appellate victories involving Scouting America’s Chapter 11 reorganization and Resolution Copper.
Huston previously clerked for Chief Justice John Roberts and Judge Raymond Kethledge of the Sixth Circuit.
Ellis has argued nine Supreme Court cases and filed hundreds of briefs at both the merits and certiorari stages.
His experience includes securities law, intellectual property, international arbitration, constitutional law, administrative law, and ERISA.
Ellis also clerked for Chief Justice Roberts and Judge A. Raymond Randolph of the D.C. Circuit.
Crown has argued appeals before the Supreme Court, D.C. Circuit, Ninth Circuit, and other federal and state appellate courts.
His work has addressed issues including AI-generated copyright, trademark remedies, expert witness standards, and independent-contractor laws.
Crown previously clerked for Justice Sonia Sotomayor and served at the Department of Justice.
The additions significantly expand Sullivan & Cromwell’s appellate, constitutional, and administrative law capabilities in Washington.
