Svante Technologies, a carbon capture and removal solutions provider based in Vancouver, announced that it has acquired Calgary-based Carbon Alpha Corporation and its related subsidiaries to accelerate commercial-scale carbon dioxide removal and expand its carbon capture and storage project development capabilities in Western Canada.
Through the transaction, Carbon Alpha’s flagship North Star Bioenergy Carbon Capture and Storage project becomes part of Svante’s portfolio alongside Svante Development Inc. The deal also brings Carbon Alpha Development Corp. and ownership interests in North Star Carbon Solutions Corp. and North Star Carbon Solutions Limited Partnership under Svante’s umbrella.
The North Star project is being developed in partnership with the Meadow Lake Tribal Council in Saskatchewan and is designed to capture and permanently store biogenic carbon dioxide produced at the MLTC Bioenergy Centre, a forestry biomass cogeneration facility. The facility generates renewable electricity and heat using sustainable waste biomass from a nearby sawmill.
Svante said the acquisition strengthens its goal of building a fully integrated carbon management platform capable of handling the entire carbon capture and storage value chain from emission source to permanent storage. The addition of Carbon Alpha brings expertise in geological carbon storage, as well as infrastructure, including a regional carbon dioxide pipeline and access to a significant storage hub in Western Canada.
The North Star BECCS project will capture carbon dioxide from the bioenergy center’s flue gas and other onsite emission sources, compress the CO₂, and transport it through a new pipeline to a dedicated injection well where it will be permanently stored in a deep saline aquifer. The process will include measurement and monitoring systems designed to generate high-quality and durable carbon dioxide removal credits.
Phase one of the project is expected to capture up to 140,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year. Svante and the Meadow Lake Tribal Council will co-own the BECCS facility, and the associated infrastructure is intended to create a regional carbon hub capable of aggregating emissions from other biogenic sources across the area.
The project also aims to provide economic benefits for the nine First Nations represented by the Meadow Lake Tribal Council. These include job creation, skills development opportunities, and long-term economic participation tied to the facility’s operations and broader carbon removal activities.
Next steps for the North Star project include conducting a front-end engineering design study and launching a test well drilling campaign. The project has already secured a lease for the storage site and obtained a test well license. Svante said the final investment decision is expected in the first quarter of 2027, after additional engineering work, permitting, and regulatory approvals.
The project is aligned with Puro.earth’s geologically stored carbon methodology and aims to produce verifiable carbon removal credits as part of the emerging global carbon dioxide removal market.
Carbon Alpha, founded in 2021, focuses on designing, developing, and operating BECCS projects that deliver durable carbon removals. Its multidisciplinary team has worked across feasibility analysis, engineering, project construction, operations, and carbon credit generation.
Svante develops nanoengineered filters and modular rotating contactor machines designed to capture carbon dioxide from industrial emissions and the atmosphere. The company has been recognized on the Global Cleantech 100 Hall of Fame list and was included in TIME and Statista’s list of top greentech companies in 2025.
