Synergy Sports Capital: $150 Million Target For Fund Investing In Emerging Sports Leagues

Synergy Sports Capital has officially launched as a private equity firm focused on acquiring controlling stakes in high-growth sports leagues, teams, and sports-driven ventures. The firm is targeting about $150 million in capital commitments for its inaugural fund, which will focus on emerging leagues outside the traditional Big Four major U.S. sports leagues.

The firm was founded by Terrence C. Murphy Sr., a former Texas A&M record-setting wide receiver and second-round NFL draft pick who later built a multi-billion-dollar real estate and investment platform through Terrence Murphy Companies. Murphy said the firm’s strategy centers on identifying high-potential leagues where fan engagement, media deals, and franchise values are still expanding.

Rather than pursuing minority stakes in established franchises that already command high valuations, Synergy Sports Capital plans to acquire controlling positions in leagues and teams positioned for structural growth. The strategy aims to allow the firm to actively shape operations, commercial strategy, and long-term value creation.

Synergy has already begun implementing this approach by investing in emerging professional sports organizations, including joining the ownership group of Atlético Dallas, a professional soccer club based in Texas competing in the United Soccer League ecosystem. The company said its involvement reflects a long-term strategy focused on integrating team performance, fan engagement, and surrounding real estate infrastructure development.

The firm operates using what it calls the Synergy Sports Operating System, a centralized platform designed to support teams and leagues through technology deployment, data analytics, media strategy, and stadium-anchored real estate development. The operating model focuses on building diversified revenue streams that extend beyond traditional franchise appreciation.

Synergy’s approach includes three primary investment pillars: team ownership and operations, mixed-use real estate projects anchored around sports venues, and sports-adjacent ventures that benefit from growing fan ecosystems. The firm believes this integrated model can create earlier liquidity opportunities for investors compared with traditional sports ownership models that rely primarily on long term franchise value growth.

Heisman Trophy winner and former NFL running back Reggie Bush has joined the firm as a partner. Bush also brings leadership connections within the emerging sports ecosystem through his involvement with The Athletes Tour, helping strengthen Synergy’s ties to athlete-driven leagues and next-generation sports properties.

The firm said it will focus particularly on leagues showing measurable growth in viewership, sponsorships, and cultural momentum, with a strong interest in women’s sports and next-generation competition formats that are gaining popularity with younger audiences.

Murphy said Synergy’s long-term vision is to build integrated sports enterprises that combine team ownership, media growth, real estate development, and operational expertise to create scalable sports platforms.

KEY QUOTES

“Right now, most big investors are putting their money into established teams that are already priced at the top of the market,” said Murphy, Founder and Managing Partner. “We see a bigger opportunity in emerging leagues where fan bases are growing, media deals are expanding, and team values are still on the rise. In those environments, strong leadership and hands-on involvement can really move the needle over time.”

“We’re focused on buying and building the next big 4,” Murphy said. “We want to own, operate and integrate, which then builds true enterprise value.”

“From day one, Terrence and Synergy approached Atlético Dallas as long-term builders, not passive investors,” said Matt Valentine, Chairman and Founder of Atlético Dallas. “They understand how to connect team performance, fan growth, and real estate infrastructure development into one cohesive strategy, and that alignment is critical as we scale.”

“Synergy stood out because they’re not just investing in teams – they’re actively shaping how they grow, operate, and scale, while building smart, long-term value around them,” said Heisman Trophy winner and former NFL running back Reggie Bush, a Partner in the fund. “Terrence brings the mindset of someone who has built businesses at scale over 20+ years, and that hands-on, conviction-driven approach is what makes this strategy so compelling.”
