Tandem PV: $4 Million California Energy Commission Grant Awarded For Advancing Next-Gen Solar Panels

By Amit Chowdhry • Jul 17, 2025

Tandem PV, a leader in next-generation solar technology, has received a $4 million grant from the California Energy Commission (CEC) to accelerate the commercialization of its ultra-efficient perovskite-silicon tandem solar panels. This funding will support extensive third-party testing to demonstrate the panels’ readiness for widespread deployment.

The company’s solar panels stack a thin layer of perovskite on top of conventional silicon cells, increasing efficiency to 28% and making them 30% more powerful than typical silicon panels.

With this grant, Tandem PV will collaborate with independent labs to assess the panels’ performance in real-world conditions, including durability and energy yield. This is the company’s second major grant in a year, following a $5.2 million award from the U.S. Department of Energy to further develop its tandem panels.

KEY QUOTES:

“This award accelerates our durability testing to bring us closer to delivering a new standard for clean energy and delivering high-efficiency solar that’s proven, reliable, and ready for the market. We’re grateful to the California Energy Commission’s leadership in investing in the technologies that will power the country’s clean energy future.”

Colin Bailie, Founder and CTO, Tandem PV

“California has long been a global leader in solar innovation, and we’re proud to be part of the next chapter. This support from the CEC signals strong momentum for tandem solar technology and helps ensure that the next wave of clean energy breakthroughs are developed and manufactured here in the U.S.”
