Teal Health Raises $22 Million Series A To Expand FDA-Authorized At-Home Cervical Cancer Screening

Teal Health has raised $22 million in Series A funding to expand access to its FDA-authorized at-home HPV cervical cancer screening platform as the women’s healthcare company prepares for broader insurance coverage beginning in January 2027.

The financing was led by .406 Ventures, with continued participation from Emerson Collective, managed by Yosemite, Forerunner and Serena Ventures. Japan-based MPower Partners joined as a new investor.

The round brings Teal Health’s total funding to $45 million and will support expansion of its commercial partnerships, technology platform and operations as the company works to make at-home cervical cancer screening more widely available across the United States.

The San Francisco-based company developed the Teal Wand, the first FDA-authorized self-collection device for at-home HPV cervical cancer screening. The device allows women to collect samples privately without a speculum or an in-office collection appointment.

Teal combines the device with a telehealth consultation, secure delivery of test results and access to follow-up care when needed.

The company is seeking to address a persistent gap in preventive healthcare. Nearly one in three U.S. women is not up to date on cervical cancer screening, according to figures cited by Teal.

Limited appointment availability, physician shortages, scheduling difficulties and the physical discomfort associated with traditional screening can discourage women from obtaining recommended tests.

Teal’s platform is designed to remove several of those barriers by allowing women to complete the sample-collection portion of screening at home while maintaining access to healthcare professionals throughout the process.

The company said 59% of women who choose its service are underscreened, indicating that the platform is reaching a substantial proportion of women who have fallen behind on recommended preventive care.

Since receiving FDA authorization in 2025, Teal has screened thousands of women nationally.

The company also reported that thousands of women have rated its end-to-end screening experience an average of 4.95 out of five.

Those early adoption figures support Teal’s strategy of offering an alternative to traditional screening that prioritizes accessibility, convenience and patient comfort without eliminating clinical oversight.

Teal’s latest financing arrives ahead of an anticipated expansion in insurance coverage.

According to the company, federal preventive care guidelines taking effect in January 2027 will require most health insurance plans to cover self-collection for cervical cancer screening.

That change could substantially increase the number of women able to access at-home HPV testing through their existing health benefits.

Teal is positioning its platform to take advantage of the expanded coverage by establishing distribution relationships across several healthcare channels.

The company plans to use the Series A proceeds to accelerate partnerships with health insurers, health systems, employers, healthcare providers and consumer brands.

These relationships are intended to make screening available through organizations where women already receive healthcare, obtain benefits or make decisions about preventive care.

Teal is also expanding direct-purchase options for individuals and organizations.

That approach would allow the company to reach women through both insurance-supported and direct-payment channels while building partnerships that can distribute its screening platform to larger populations.

The company sees broad distribution as an important step in moving at-home HPV testing beyond early adopters and establishing it as a routine component of preventive healthcare.

Another priority is expanding its workforce.

Teal plans to increase hiring across clinical, commercial, technology and operational functions as it scales its platform and supports a growing network of healthcare partners.

The new funding also builds on the company’s clinical research and healthcare partnerships.

Teal has contributed to 17 peer-reviewed papers and presentations related to self-collection screening and said its approach has been incorporated into national screening guidelines.

The company is already working with health systems, providers, employers and payers to improve screening access.

These partnerships are designed to address screening gaps while potentially reducing the burden on clinics by allowing appropriate patients to complete sample collection outside traditional healthcare facilities.

For health systems facing staffing shortages and limited appointment capacity, at-home collection could provide another way to deliver preventive screening while preserving clinical resources for patients requiring examinations, diagnostic procedures or treatment.

HPV testing plays an important role in cervical cancer prevention because persistent infections with certain high-risk types of human papillomavirus can lead to cervical cancer.

Screening can help identify women who need additional evaluation before cancer develops or progresses.

Although cervical cancer is among the most preventable cancers, thousands of women in the United States are diagnosed with the disease each year. Teal’s announcement cited an estimate of approximately 4,320 U.S. deaths from cervical cancer in 2026.

The company believes expanding access to convenient and accurate screening can help address preventable gaps in care, particularly among women who have difficulty obtaining traditional appointments.

Its technology is intended to complement existing healthcare services rather than replace the medical follow-up required when screening results indicate potential concerns.

For .406 Ventures, the investment reflects growing demand for preventive healthcare services that combine clinically validated technology with a more convenient patient experience.

The investor sees Teal’s FDA authorization, early patient adoption and anticipated insurance coverage expansion as factors supporting its next stage of growth.

Teal’s longer-term strategy is to establish a comprehensive screening experience that connects at-home sample collection with medical consultations, results and follow-up care.

With $45 million in total funding, an expanding healthcare partnership network and broader insurance coverage expected in 2027, the company is preparing to scale its model to reach more women nationwide.
