Teledyne Technologies has announced a definitive agreement to acquire the TransponderTech business from Saab AB. The deal, expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2025 pending customary regulatory approvals, will bring a suite of maritime technologies into Teledyne’s growing portfolio.
TransponderTech, based in Sweden, has long been recognized as a leader in maritime communications and navigation systems. The company’s products are certified under the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) convention and are widely deployed across commercial shipping, military fleets, and airborne platforms.
Known for their precision and reliability, TransponderTech’s solutions are engineered to perform in the most demanding environments—whether navigating congested shipping lanes or operating in regions vulnerable to GPS interference.
Among the technologies included in the acquisition are Automatic Identification System (AIS), VHF Data Exchange System (VDES), and Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) platforms. These systems are essential for modern maritime operations, enabling vessels to communicate, share data, and navigate safely. TransponderTech has also been at the forefront of developing VDES, a next-generation AIS solution that significantly enhances data exchange capabilities and security. VDES transponders are designed to work seamlessly with low Earth orbit satellites, offering global coverage and interoperability that traditional systems cannot match.
The acquisition will see TransponderTech integrated into Teledyne FLIR’s Maritime group, which already includes well-known brands such as Raymarine, FLIR Marine, and ChartWorld. This strategic alignment is expected to create new synergies across Teledyne’s marine technology offerings, allowing the company to deliver more comprehensive solutions to its customers.
By combining TransponderTech’s advanced communications systems with Teledyne’s expertise in radar, thermal imaging, and electronic charting, the company aims to enhance the safety, efficiency, and operational reach of maritime operators worldwide.
This deal marks Teledyne’s twelfth corporate carve-out and its third in 2025, reflecting the company’s ongoing strategy of targeted acquisitions to strengthen its position in high-growth, high-impact sectors. According to Grégoire Outters, Vice President and General Manager of Teledyne FLIR Maritime and Raymarine, the acquisition is a natural fit. He noted that TransponderTech serves markets familiar to Teledyne and produces technologies that complement its existing product lines.
KEY QUOTE:
“TransponderTech serves customers and markets familiar to Teledyne and designs and manufactures products that are complementary to existing Teledyne products. Today, Teledyne primarily participates in maritime navigation and safety by offering products such as electronic chart displays (ECDIS), radars, and thermal imaging systems. Adding TransponderTech’s business, employees, and advanced AIS, VDES, and GNSS technologies to Teledyne should enhance the safety, efficiency, and operational reach of our customers at sea.”
