Instant messaging service Telegram has hit 400 million monthly users. This is up from 300 million that it reported in October 2019. And about 1.5 million new users are joining every day, largely due to the social distancing measures associated with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Telegram also indicated that it is building a secure video calling feature reported TechCrunch. This would make the service more competitive against platforms like WhatsApp, Messenger, and Zoom.

Telegram was founded by Pavel Durov — who is also known for launching the popular VK social network in Russia. Since launching in 2013, Telegram raised about $850 million in funding, according to Crunchbase.

One of the most popular Telegram features is the app’s desktop interface. The desktop app does not require a phone to be linked to it. Plus it supports cloud storage.
