Teradar has officially emerged from stealth with the introduction of the world’s first commercial terahertz (THz) vision sensor. This breakthrough could redefine the future of automotive safety and autonomous driving. The $150 million Series B round was led by VXI Capital with participation from IBEX Investors, Capricorn Investment Group, The Engine Ventures (MIT), and Lockheed Martin Ventures. This capital will be used to accelerate production, scale integration with global OEMs, and expand applications in defense, healthcare, and industrial automation.

The Boston-based company announced that its proprietary chip technology provides up to twenty times the resolution of current radar systems, offering long-range, high-definition perception in any weather condition.

The technology introduces a new category of sensing that may replace radar and lidar in next-generation safety systems for cars, trucks, and autonomous vehicles. Backed by $150 million in Series B funding, Teradar is already collaborating with eight leading global automotive OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers to integrate its terahertz vision capabilities into future vehicle programs.

The company’s Modular Terahertz Engine (MTE) is a solid-state, customizable chip architecture designed to meet the range and resolution needs of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and fully autonomous driving platforms. The MTE operates through a proprietary suite of chips that transmit, receive, and process terahertz waves safely and efficiently, creating a new standard for automotive perception and situational awareness.

Teradar’s terahertz vision enables intelligent vehicles to detect hazards in real time, providing robust environmental awareness under all conditions. The company estimates that this advancement in sensing technology could help prevent more than 150,000 fatal accidents worldwide each year by enabling vehicles to anticipate and avoid potential dangers more effectively.

Founded by engineers from MIT and Stanford with deep expertise in electromagnetics, photonics, and advanced chip design, Teradar’s mission is to eliminate automotive accidents through next-generation sensing systems that combine performance, reliability, and scalability.

KEY QUOTES:

“Terahertz sensors represent a transformative leap for automotive perception. Their ability to deliver exceptional resolution in all weather conditions and at long range enables intelligent vehicles to detect hazards with unprecedented accuracy. This technology brings reliable, real-time environmental awareness to autonomous systems, promising dramatically safer roads and redefining what’s possible for advanced driver assistance and fully autonomous driving worldwide.”

Tom Lee, Professor of Electrical Engineering at Stanford University

“Teradar has made terahertz vision a reality by bringing unprecedented resolution and awareness at long range in any weather. This breakthrough provides vehicles the perception needed to anticipate danger, avoid accidents, and, ultimately, save lives. Ultimately our goal is to eliminate automotive accidents altogether through dramatically better perception, and this vision can only be achieved with robust, high-performance sensors that can be easily integrated and scaled to support every type of vehicle.”
