Terafab Project launches in 7 days

Tesla plans to begin launching its ambitious “Terafab” artificial intelligence chip manufacturing project within seven days, according to CEO Elon Musk, who revealed the timeline in a post on X. The brief message, stating that the “Terafab Project launches in 7 days,” signaled the start of what could become one of the company’s largest infrastructure initiatives as it seeks to produce its own advanced AI chips to power autonomous driving systems and other AI-driven technologies.
The Terafab initiative is designed to manufacture specialized processors for Tesla’s next generation of artificial intelligence systems, including the fifth-generation AI chip, AI5. These chips are expected to power the company’s Full Self-Driving platform and broader AI ambitions across vehicles and robotics.
Musk has previously suggested Tesla may need to build its own massive semiconductor facility because external suppliers may not be able to meet the company’s rapidly growing demand for AI computing hardware. During earlier remarks, he said Tesla might have to construct a chip fabrication plant significantly larger than its Gigafactories to achieve the required production scale.
While the company currently works with major semiconductor manufacturers such as TSMC and Samsung Electronics, Musk has also floated the possibility of collaborating with Intel on manufacturing efforts, though he noted that no agreement has been finalized.
Details about the Terafab project — including the facility’s location, production capacity, and timeline for chip output — have not yet been disclosed. Tesla did not immediately respond to requests for additional information following Musk’s announcement.
If realized, the Terafab initiative would represent a major step toward vertical integration for Tesla, giving the company greater control over the design and production of AI hardware needed to support autonomous vehicles, robotics, and large-scale AI computing.
