Tesla has officially announced the Robotaxi, which has debuted in Austin, Texas over the weekend. Initially, customers would pay a flat fee of $4.20. Tesla said that Cybercab, its fully autonomous vehicle, will begin offering rides in your area in the future.

For now, the company is operating invite-only robotaxi rides with a few Model Y vehicles within a geofenced area of Austin. Within the vehicles will be safety monitors.

The CyberCab sedan would not have a steering wheel or pedals when it rolls out as part of a planned Robotaxi fleet. Volume production of the CyberCab is expected to begin in 2026. Tesla is also planning to build a Robovan vehicle, which would carry more passengers.

In previous earnings calls, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said that Tesla drivers would be able to rent out their vehicles as robotaxis when they are not in use. It is believed that Musk is aiming to roll out the robotaxis in San Francisco and Los Angeles next.

The most popular autonomous ride-hailing company is Waymo, which has driverless rides available in Phoenix, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Austin. Waymo also plans to roll out in Atlanta, Miami, and Washington, D.C. As of May, Waymo reported providing over 250,000 paid trips each week.
