Tesla plans to unveil its long-delayed next-generation Roadster on October 1, nearly nine years after the electric vehicle manufacturer first revealed the sports car.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk confirmed the date after the company’s account on X posted a launch-themed graphic displaying October 1.
Tesla originally unveiled the new Roadster in November 2017 and initially said deliveries would begin in 2020. The vehicle has subsequently experienced repeated delays as Tesla shifted resources toward higher-volume vehicles, autonomous driving and other projects.
The Roadster program has reportedly evolved considerably during that period.
Rather than simply serving as a successor to Tesla’s original Roadster, the vehicle has reportedly developed into an all-new carbon-fiber hypercar after Tesla moved away from an alternative design based on Model S Plaid components.
The unveiling could also include a demonstration of a special version incorporating cold-gas thrusters developed in collaboration with SpaceX. That demonstration has reportedly been considered for SpaceX’s test facility in McGregor, Texas.
The Roadster’s return comes as Tesla increasingly emphasizes artificial intelligence, autonomous vehicles and robotics while maintaining a comparatively limited lineup of conventional passenger vehicles.
Tesla recently began offering limited rides in its two-seat Cybercab in Austin, another product Musk has positioned as important to the company’s longer-term autonomous vehicle strategy.
