The Business Council Names Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon As Chair

The Business Council has named Goldman Sachs Chairman and CEO David Solomon as its next chair, succeeding Target Executive Chair Brian Cornell as the organization prepares for a new phase focused on technological disruption, global economic shifts, and evolving leadership challenges.

Solomon will lead the Washington, D.C.-based organization, which brings together chief executives from major global companies to exchange perspectives on economic, technological, and business issues. His appointment comes as artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies increasingly reshape corporate strategy, workforce planning, governance, and investment.

Cornell became chair of The Business Council in 2024, succeeding Elevance Health President and CEO Gail Boudreaux, who was the first woman to chair the organization. During Cornell’s tenure, the Council continued to serve as a forum for senior corporate leaders navigating rapid technological change, geopolitical uncertainty, and shifts in the global economy.

As incoming chair, Solomon is expected to focus on maintaining the Council’s role as a venue for CEOs to share insights and collaborate around complex economic and business challenges. The organization highlighted his experience overseeing Goldman Sachs as it has incorporated artificial intelligence and technology more deeply into its operations and long-term strategy.

The Business Council also announced its 2026-2027 Executive Committee, which includes executives from some of the world’s largest companies. Members include Amazon Founder and Executive Chairman Jeff Bezos, Elevance Health President and CEO Gail Boudreaux, Ford President and CEO Jim Farley, Nasdaq Chair and CEO Adena Friedman, Citadel Founder and CEO Ken Griffin, Microsoft Chair and CEO Satya Nadella, AMD Chair and CEO Lisa Su, and Chevron Chair and CEO Mike Wirth.

The Business Council traces its roots to 1933, when it was established as The Business Advisory Council for the U.S. Department of Commerce. The organization adopted its current name in 1961 and expanded its scope to include advisory functions across the federal government.

Today, the Council operates as a learning, networking, and best-practice-sharing organization for chief executives of major multinational businesses, with members selected by their peers.
