The Hartford has named company President A. Morris “Mo” Tooker as its next Chief Executive Officer, succeeding Christopher Swift as part of a planned leadership transition.
Tooker will become CEO on March 1, 2027, while Swift will transition to Executive Chair of The Hartford’s Board of Directors on the same date. Tooker will also join the company’s board effective October 1, 2026.
Tooker joined The Hartford in 2015 as Chief Underwriting Officer and has held a series of increasingly senior positions during his 11 years with the insurer.
As President, Tooker has overseen business performance, strategy and enterprise-wide execution. His work has included strengthening underwriting capabilities, expanding the company’s risk appetite and growing risk-mitigation services intended to help customers prevent losses and increase resilience.
He has also worked to increase collaboration across The Hartford’s businesses through a more integrated go-to-market strategy that combines expertise and customer insights across the organization.
Tooker’s elevation is part of a succession process that will keep Swift closely involved with the company during the transition.
Swift will move to Executive Chair after nearly 13 years as CEO and more than 12 years as Chairman. During his tenure as CEO and CFO, The Hartford said he helped transform the company into a more focused and disciplined insurer and substantially strengthened its financial profile.
Under Swift’s leadership, The Hartford more than tripled its net income return on equity and generated a more than eightfold increase in its share price. The company also expanded its capabilities through technology investments, broader product offerings and a larger geographic footprint.
As Executive Chair, Swift will lead the Board of Directors, help guide and oversee corporate strategy and serve as an adviser to Tooker. The structure is intended to provide continuity as Tooker assumes leadership of the company.
Swift will also continue several community engagements, including leadership of the City of Hartford’s Vision Committee.
He expects to step down as Executive Chair during the second half of 2027.
The Hartford operates across property and casualty insurance and employee benefits and traces its history to 1810.
