THINK Surgical, a developer of orthopedic surgical robots, has appointed Rick McDowell as Vice President of Sales. McDowell brings more than 20 years of experience in medical device commercialization, clinical strategy, and capital sales, including extensive leadership experience in surgical robotics. He will report to Chris Marrus, Executive Vice President, and lead the company’s national sales organization as THINK Surgical expands its commercial operations.
McDowell joins THINK Surgical from Gigly, where he served as Chief Commercial Officer, overseeing enterprise-wide commercial strategy, brand positioning, and go-to-market execution. Previously, he led capital sales for PROCEPT BioRobotics across the North Central United States and spent more than a decade at Stryker Robotics/Orthopaedics, most recently serving as Area Sales Director for the Southeast region.
Earlier in his career, McDowell held several senior sales leadership positions at MAKO Surgical over more than four years. These included Director of Clinical Sales, where he managed an eight-district, 90-member national clinical sales organization responsible for $85 million in sales. His experience spans commercial strategy, clinical operations, hospital procurement, and the introduction of robotic surgical technologies.
Throughout his career, McDowell has generated more than $500 million in lifetime capital equipment and disposable product sales, according to THINK Surgical. His industry accomplishments include receiving Stryker’s Tim Scannell Legacy Award for Contributions Over Time in 2022 and being named Stryker Robotics/Orthopaedics Area Sales Director of the Year in 2016.
McDowell’s appointment comes as THINK Surgical continues to scale its commercial operations and expand the adoption of its orthopedic robotic technologies. His responsibilities will include leading the company’s national sales team, developing its market strategy, and identifying growth opportunities.
THINK Surgical is a privately held, U.S.-based medical technology company developing robotic systems for orthopedic surgery.
