Trump Says Apple Will Work With Intel To Design And Build Chips In U.S.

President Donald Trump said Apple has agreed to work with Intel to design and build chips in the United States.

The announcement would represent a major win for Intel as the chipmaker works to strengthen its foundry business and regain ground in advanced semiconductor manufacturing. Intel previously supplied processors for Apple’s Mac computers before Apple transitioned to its own M-series chips in 2020.

Apple currently relies heavily on Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. to manufacture the chips it designs for iPhones, iPads, Macs, and other devices. A partnership with Intel could help Apple diversify its supply chain and add U.S.-based production capacity.

The specific types of chips Intel would make for Apple were not disclosed. However, earlier reporting indicated that Apple and Intel had reached a preliminary chip-making agreement after more than a year of discussions.

The Trump administration has played an active role in encouraging major technology companies to work with Intel. The U.S. government previously converted nearly $9 billion in federal grants into Intel stock, giving it a 10% stake in the company.

The potential Apple partnership follows other efforts to support Intel’s business. Nvidia previously invested $5 billion in Intel, and Elon Musk and Intel announced plans tied to a chip manufacturing plant in Texas as part of Musk’s Terafab project.

The announcement also comes as demand for advanced chips continues to rise due to AI infrastructure, data centers, and consumer device needs. Apple has faced supply constraints for some products, and additional manufacturing partners could help reduce dependency on a single foundry supplier.

Intel shares rose sharply after Trump’s comments, as investors viewed a potential Apple manufacturing deal as a positive development for Intel’s foundry strategy.

Apple and Intel did not immediately confirm further details of the arrangement.
