Type One Energy has raised $200 million in Series B financing to advance its FusionDirect development program and Project Infinity commercial fusion initiative in Tennessee. Breakthrough Energy Ventures and Clutterbuck Capital co-led the round. New investors included Lowercarbon Capital, Siemens Energy Ventures, and SiteGround Capital alongside other investors.
The financing will support continued development of Type One Energy’s optimized stellarator technology and execution of Project Infinity at the Tennessee Valley Authority’s Bull Run site in East Tennessee.
Project Infinity includes the Infinity One stellarator engineering prototype and a planned 400 MWe Infinity Two commercial fusion power plant.
Type One Energy is pursuing a partner-intensive business model designed to use existing manufacturing, engineering, financing and operating capabilities across the energy industry rather than recreating those resources internally.
The company believes this approach can reduce development costs, risks and timelines while allowing multiple fusion projects to be developed in parallel.
Type One Energy said it now views the principal obstacles to commercializing stellarator fusion as engineering and industrial challenges rather than unresolved plasma physics questions.
The Series B follows receipt of the initial fusion operating license for Project Infinity from the State of Tennessee.
Type One Energy is also pursuing another commercial project through the UK Infinity Fusion Consortium with Tokamak Energy, AECOM, Sheffield Forgemasters and Barclays.
KEY QUOTES:
