Uber Technologies Inc (NYSE: UBER) is reportedly going to launch two autonomous delivery pilots in Los Angeles through the Uber Eats program, according to TechCrunch. Uber is making this happen through partnerships with robotic sidewalk delivery company Serve Robotics (an Uber spin-off) and autonomous vehicle company Motional.
These programs are part of a group of new products that Uber is launching for its ride-hailing and delivery services. These features are being announced today at the company’s Global Product Event.
Both of the pilots will start out small and deliver food from a few merchants, including an organic cafe called Kreation. The program with Serve Robotics will focus on shorter trips in West Hollywood. And Motional will take on longer distance deliveries in Santa Monica.
“We’ll be able to learn from both of those pilots what customers actually want, what merchants actually want, and what makes sense for delivery as we start to integrate our platform with AV companies,” said an Uber spokesperson via TechCrunch. “The hope is that they’re successful and that we learn over the coming months, and then figure out how to scale.”
