UCLA, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and the American Friends of Hebrew University have signed a framework to pursue future collaboration in biomedical research.

The non-binding Memorandum of Understanding calls for the creation of the UCLA-Hebrew University Biomedical Research Collaboration.

Under the proposed structure, the institutions would jointly establish research priorities, encourage interdisciplinary projects and develop opportunities for scientific exchange, education and discovery.

The David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA will manage the program on UCLA’s behalf, although participation will not be limited to medical school faculty.

The agreement was signed September 22 by UCLA Chancellor Julio Frenk and Hebrew University President Tamir Sheafer.

Both universities have research programs spanning biomedical science, medical education and translational research, and the proposed collaboration is intended to combine complementary expertise and resources.

Additional details, including specific research projects and program structures, are expected to be announced as the institutions finalize their plans.

At the same event, UCLA’s Younes & Soraya Nazarian Center for Israel Studies and The Hebrew University signed a separate Memorandum of Understanding.

KEY QUOTES:

“By bringing together complementary expertise and resources, we can help accelerate discoveries that benefit patients far beyond our own institutions. Establishing this framework is an important first step.”

Dr. Steven Dubinett, Dean of the David Geffen School of Medicine and UCLA Associate Vice Chancellor for Research
