UniCredit has entered into a long-term strategic collaboration with Accenture and IBM to modernize the technology infrastructure supporting the bank’s operations across 13 European markets. The companies will develop a new banking technology operating model combining mission-critical systems with cloud, data and artificial intelligence capabilities.
The initiative is intended to give UniCredit greater control over the evolution of its technology while improving its ability to introduce digital services and scale AI across the organization.
As part of the agreement, Accenture will acquire IBM’s majority interest in the joint venture that currently manages a significant portion of UniCredit’s technology infrastructure.
IBM will continue supporting UniCredit by providing modernized IBM Z systems, software and consulting services.
The agreement marks the beginning of a multiyear program to upgrade UniCredit’s underlying systems and technology operating model.
UniCredit said the initiative will support its broader growth strategy by increasing resilience, accelerating innovation and creating a scalable technology foundation across its European network.
The bank serves more than 20 million clients across Italy, Germany, Austria and Central and Eastern Europe.
The collaboration is intended to establish a model for next-generation banking technology capable of combining legacy infrastructure reliability with modern hybrid cloud flexibility.
Completion of the transaction involving Accenture’s acquisition of IBM’s joint venture interest remains subject to regulatory approvals, customary closing conditions and applicable employee information and consultation procedures.
