University Of Illinois And GenH2 Partner To Advance Liquid Hydrogen Research For Aviation

The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and GenH2 have formed a collaboration to advance liquid hydrogen technologies for next-generation aviation.

GenH2 will provide the university with a laboratory-scale hydrogen liquefier, giving researchers the ability to produce liquid hydrogen directly on campus for aerospace testing.

This capability is expected to address a major challenge in hydrogen aviation research, as universities often struggle to obtain and store the quantities of liquid hydrogen needed for repeated laboratory experiments.

By producing liquid hydrogen on-site, University of Illinois researchers will be able to conduct more frequent testing around storage, transfer, refueling, propulsion, and cryogenic fuel-system technologies.

Research will focus on areas including operational resilience, technological readiness, safety, regulatory preparedness, and energy efficiency.

Researchers will also evaluate pumps, valves, seals, storage systems, and other components under actual liquid hydrogen conditions.

The new infrastructure will support work involving heat transfer, multiphase flow dynamics, and the long-term durability of materials exposed to cryogenic environments.

Additional research could support technologies including vapor-shielded tanks, ultra-high-endurance unmanned aerial vehicles, and fault-tolerant cryogenic insulation.

The collaboration combines the aerospace research capabilities of the University of Illinois with GenH2’s expertise in hydrogen liquefaction, controlled storage, and cryogenic infrastructure.
