The University of Oklahoma has announced Project 200, a generational investment in research, talent, and infrastructure designed to strengthen the health of Oklahomans, grow the state’s economy, and expand opportunity through scientific discovery. By 2032, the initiative is projected to generate nearly $100 million annually in new federal research funding, support more than 2,000 new jobs, produce an estimated $95 million in new state and local tax revenue, and help train more than 1,000 scientists in Oklahoma.
At the center of the initiative is the recruitment of approximately 200 world-renowned researchers aligned with four strategic impact areas where OU said it is uniquely positioned to lead nationally: health, including efforts to reduce cancer mortality by 10% and diabetes-related deaths by 30%; extreme weather, building on Oklahoma’s position as the nation’s third most tornado-frequent state since 1950; national security and defense, leveraging the state’s seven major military installations including Tinker Air Force Base and Fort Sill; and secure and resilient energy systems, capitalizing on Oklahoma’s role as a leading net energy-exporting state. Total university research expenditures are projected to top $500 million, placing OU among the nation’s Top 100 medical research universities, with a trajectory toward $1 billion in annual research expenditures by 2032 — a path that could lead to membership in the Association of American Universities.
The launch comes at a moment the university described as a convergence of opportunity, with OU’s research enterprise having grown 70% over the past six years — its fastest pace in five decades. Since launching its “Lead On, University” Strategic Plan in 2020, OU has built research momentum and strategic partnerships to prepare for an initiative of this scale. Oklahoma ranks 45th nationally in overall health and 49th in health outcomes, and the university said the urgency of those gaps makes Project 200 both timely and consequential for the state’s future.
