Vanguard To Acquire Altruist For A Reported $4 Billion

Vanguard has agreed to acquire Altruist, an AI-forward wealth technology and custody platform serving independent financial advisors, as the investment manager seeks to expand the reach of financial advice through technology and deeper relationships with the registered investment advisor market. The terms were undisclosed, but WSJ sources said the deal was about $4 billion.

Following closing, Altruist is expected to operate as a standalone business under Vanguard’s ownership.

The company will retain its leadership team, brand, advisor focus and distinct operating model.

Vanguard said the structure is intended to preserve Altruist’s entrepreneurial culture, operating speed and close relationships with independent advisors while providing the company with substantially greater resources to invest in technology and custody capabilities.

Altruist has developed a purpose-built wealth management platform combining custody infrastructure with technology designed to improve advisor workflows and client experiences.

The acquisition will also give Vanguard direct access to Altruist’s advisor technology platform and bring the asset manager closer to independent advisors and the investors they serve.

Vanguard first invested in Altruist in 2020.

The original investment was aimed at increasing competition in the RIA custody market, making financial advice more accessible and improving outcomes for investors.

Since then, Vanguard has developed a deeper relationship with Altruist and its management team while observing the company’s expansion of AI-enabled technology for financial advisors.

Vanguard believes technology can help address a significant capacity constraint within financial advice.

While many investors want or could benefit from professional financial guidance, the industry has a finite number of advisors available to serve them.

The companies see technology as a way to increase advisor productivity without removing the human judgment and relationships at the center of financial planning.

For Altruist, Vanguard’s ownership will provide additional long-term capital, investment expertise and organizational resources to accelerate product development.

The company plans to continue investing in its advisor technology and custody infrastructure while maintaining its focus on independent financial advisors.

Vanguard also expects the acquisition to strengthen its position across financial intermediaries.

Many investors holding Vanguard funds access those products through advisors, creating an opportunity for the company to support those relationships through Altruist’s infrastructure.

Altruist founder and CEO Jason Wenk will continue leading the business.

The companies expect the transaction to close later in 2026, subject to customary closing conditions and required regulatory approvals.

KEY QUOTES:

“Many investors in Vanguard funds choose to work with financial advisors, and far more people could benefit from access to financial advice than the industry can serve today. The need is broad, but the capacity to provide high-quality advice is limited. Technology can help close that gap by enabling advisors to serve more people and serve them better, while preserving the human judgment and relationships at the center of good financial advice.”

“We’ve had the benefit of getting to know Altruist’s people, platform, and potential over the last several years, and what we saw was a mission-aligned organization building AI-enabled technology around the real needs of advisors and the investors they serve. As more investors in Vanguard funds choose to work with financial advisors, we see a significant opportunity to build on the strengths of two highly complementary organizations to help advisors serve clients more effectively and help more investors achieve financial security and peace of mind.”

Salim Ramji, CEO Of Vanguard

“Altruist was built on the simple belief that when independent advisors have better technology and lower prices, they can do their best work and bring high-quality advice to more people. Vanguard shares our conviction in that mission, and their trusted investment expertise and resources will enable us to pursue it with greater speed and reach. I’m incredibly excited about what this will mean for advisors and their clients, and I look forward to building the future of Altruist together.”
