VB Spine has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire exclusive rights to the xvision Spine System from Augmedics, adding augmented reality navigation to its enhanced visualization portfolio. The transaction, which is subject to regulatory approval and customary closing conditions, is expected to close in the coming weeks.
The xvision Spine System is the first FDA-cleared augmented reality navigation platform in spine surgery. Designed to combine the benefits of surgical navigation with the familiarity of open procedures, the system enables surgeons to visualize anatomy while maintaining direct patient visibility. It is intended to support improved accuracy and precision, enhance workflow efficiency, and reduce radiation exposure. The platform has been used in nearly 13,000 spinal procedures to date.
The agreement represents a key step in VB Spine’s broader enhanced visualization strategy. The company recently expanded its technology capabilities with the acquisition of the SpineHawk intraoperative spinal visualization platform from Robotron Surgical Technologies. By combining xvision’s augmented reality navigation with SpineHawk and its existing implant portfolio, VB Spine aims to deliver more integrated and differentiated spine solutions.
Following the closing, VB Spine and Augmedics plan to collaborate on an orderly transition to ensure continuity for customers.
The xvision Spine System with xvision Spine System Software is cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as an aid for precisely locating anatomical structures in open, minimally invasive, or percutaneous spine procedures.
Founded and led by the Viscogliosi Brothers, VB Spine is the largest privately held spine company and among the largest family-owned medical technology companies globally. The company offers a comprehensive portfolio of spine solutions supported by a growing global distribution network. Augmedics focuses on developing augmented reality technologies for surgery and intends to use the agreement to concentrate on expanding AR navigation into adjacent surgical indications.
