Vector Capital has appointed Kiran Rao as Managing Director and Head of Value Creation as the private equity firm strengthens its operating capabilities around artificial intelligence and technology-company transformation. Rao will also serve on Vector’s Management Committee.
He joins Vector from Vista Equity Partners, where he spent five years as Chief Operating Officer of its Operations team and led an AI task force spanning more than 50 enterprise software companies.
Earlier in his career, Rao served as an Operating Partner at TPG and as a Senior Engagement Manager at McKinsey & Company.
At Vector, Rao will lead the firm’s value-creation strategy across its portfolio of established software and technology businesses.
The appointment comes as private equity firms increasingly focus on how portfolio companies can use generative AI and automation to improve product development, sales, customer support, engineering and operating efficiency.
For mature software companies, AI can also create more fundamental strategic questions around pricing, product architecture and competitive positioning.
Vector is positioning Rao’s role around helping portfolio companies navigate that transition while maintaining the operational discipline that has historically underpinned the firm’s investment strategy.
Founded in 1997, Vector specializes in transformational majority-control investments in established technology companies and has completed more than 60 platform investments.
The firm focuses in part on complex situations where operational improvements can play a major role in generating long-term value.
Rao’s experience leading AI initiatives across a large software portfolio gives Vector a dedicated senior executive focused on bringing those capabilities into its value-creation playbook.
