To delve deeper into this innovation, Pulse 2.0 interviewed the CEO of Ventus Respiratory Technologies, Arjun Grewal, to learn more.
Arjun Grewal’s Background
Before venturing into the corporate realm, Grewal dedicated two decades to serving in the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF). On his time with CAF, Arjun Grewal said:
“Throughout my tenure, I was actively involved in various international operations and crucial counter-terrorism missions, including multiple deployments in Afghanistan. Following my retirement from military service, I took on several leadership positions at IBM, specifically within the Cloud and Business Analytics divisions. This experience allowed me to develop a strong understanding of business and innovation on a global scale, particularly relating to enterprise, data, and cloud technologies. Now, with Ventus, I am presented with a unique opportunity to bring to market the equipment that I wish I had during my service and deployments, to keep my fellow brothers and sisters in arms safer.”
Formation Of Ventus
How did the idea for Ventus come together? Grewal shared:
“In 2018, Ventus was approached by the Department of National Defence (DND) and Canadian Special Operations Forces Command to address a pressing issue raised by the end users themselves – the lack of suitable equipment to protect against heavy metal contamination, lead poisoning, and other hazardous particulates encountered during high-volume training and operations. We created the TR2 to meet this need, and it is still the only CE-certified equipment like this available, and adoption is starting to pick up.”
“Prior to the creation of Ventus’ TR2 tactical respirator, the available options, such as gas masks, were primarily designed for countering acute threats like mustard gas. However, we are uniquely focused on the chronic threats that result from long-term exposure to particulate matter that have now been shown to lead to cancer and other health complications.”
Challenges Faced

“The primary challenge lies in effectively educating both end users and leadership about the crucial significance of this missing piece of equipment. This task is particularly vital when dealing with government clients, as the sales cycle tends to be lengthy. Sustaining the team and the company throughout this waiting period can be a significant obstacle for many startups, as it requires consistent effort and resources.”
“Obtaining international certifications is also a complex endeavor. It entails all factors of design, manufacturing, quality assurance, and continuous efficacy testing. Our founder dedicated the past decade to designing respirators, and the size and form factor of the TR2 to achieve the rigorous standards of certification is a huge accomplishment. In February, we were granted the CE certification, which verifies that the product has undergone evaluation by the governing body and meets the safety, health, and environmental protection requirements outlined by the European Union.”
Core Products
What are Ventus’ core products and features? Grewal eplxinaed;
“The TR2 has demonstrated its ability to protect the wearer from toxic environmental exposure and sets a new standard of protection. Notably, it achieves this level of performance while maintaining a compact, lightweight, and breathable design, which significantly enhances comfort and usability.”
“The advanced design of the respirator also accommodates the integration of cutting-edge technologies such as sensors, biometrics, Internet of Things (IoT) capabilities, and voice-operated applications.”
“It also seamlessly integrates with existing communication tools, helmets, and essential ear and eye protection, ensuring a cohesive and streamlined setup for maximum efficiency in the field.”
Evolution Of Ventus’ Technology
How has Ventus’ technology evolved since launching? Grewal noted:
“Since its initial launch, the TR2 has undergone significant evolution and improvement. Particularly throughout the certification process, we made critical enhancements to achieve compliance.”
“Another notable development since launch, is actually the expansion of our target market. Initially, we were focused on serving elite military units and have now successfully extended our reach to include conventional military units, police forces, firefighters, even personnel combating wildfires. Additionally, the TR2 has found utility among those engaging in high-volume weapons training, and even recreational shooting at gun ranges.”
Significant Milestones
What have been some of Ventus’s most significant milestones? Grewal cited:
“Ventus has achieved several significant milestones that have propelled the company forward. One notable milestone was the successful closure of a seed financing round in March, led by an investment from the ONE9 Special Mission Fund. ONE9 not only brought essential capital but also provided access to an extensive network and expertise in national security, defense, business scaling, and financial management. ONE9 is Canada’s first and only venture capital fund and accelerator focused purely on national security and critical infrastructure technologies.”
Customer Success Stories
What are some customer success stories that you can share? Grewal highlighted:
“The TR2 respirator has received high praise and recognition from various law enforcement agencies and personnel. The Houston Police Department, in particular, has included the TR2 as a crucial component of its training safety guidelines for highly toxic and hazardous environments. This forward-thinking approach demonstrates that they are ahead of other government bodies and many police forces, with officers wearing the TR2 during specific training evolutions.”
“Testimonials from users further highlight the positive impact of the TR2 respirator. A SWAT officer expressed their long-standing search for a similar solution and emphasized the significance of the TR2. The Chief Inspector of Halton Police Department also extended gratitude to Ventus for creating the mask, underscoring its value for their team. A Special Operations Forces operator praised the TR2’s lightweight nature, noting how comfortable it is to wear, and a SWAT officer described the communication capabilities as a game changer, with crystal-clear audio during crucial operations.”
Total Addressable Market
What total addressable market (TAM) size is Ventus pursuing? Grewal assessed:
“Ventus is pursuing a significant total addressable market in the realm of particulate respiratory protection. By creating a brand-new category in the tactical respirator market, Ventus has established itself as an innovator in this field. Based on thorough research, the estimated value of the TAM for this class of particulate respiratory protection is approximately $2.6 billion.”
“The potential for utilization extends far beyond the CBRNE (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, and Explosive) mask market. In fact, the scope encompasses a broader range of applications. The US VA (Veterans Affairs) defines “Airborne hazard” as any contaminant or potentially toxic substance that individuals are exposed to through the air they breathe. With this acknowledgment, the TR2 should be as standard issue as a helmet or ballistic eyewear.
