Camtasia, TechSmith’s video creation and screen recording platform, has launched a ChatGPT plugin that can transform screenshots into AI-generated instructional videos, giving users a new way to create training and tutorial content directly from a conversational workflow.
The plugin introduces Camtasia’s generative screencast workflow, allowing users to upload one or more screenshots inside ChatGPT and describe the tutorial they want to create. The system then generates a customizable storyboard, narration script, callouts and areas of onscreen focus before sending the project to Camtasia Online for additional editing and sharing.
The technology is designed to make instructional video creation more similar to working with generative AI text tools, where users can continuously refine their output through prompts instead of building every element manually.
Camtasia said the system goes beyond basic image recognition through technology it calls Screentelligence.
Rather than simply identifying objects visible in a screenshot, the system analyzes interface elements such as buttons, menus and navigation patterns to interpret the workflow being demonstrated.
That understanding allows the AI to determine where viewers should focus during different parts of the tutorial. It can automatically create zooms, focus points and animated cursor movements intended to guide viewers through each step.
Users maintain control over the generated result. Storyboards can be revised through additional ChatGPT prompts, while individual scenes, narration, voiceovers, titles, callouts and focus areas can also be adjusted manually.
The workflow begins by selecting and installing the Camtasia plugin in ChatGPT. Users can then invoke Camtasia inside a conversation, describe what they want the tutorial to explain and upload screenshots showing the application or process.
ChatGPT creates a proposed storyboard with scenes, narration and callout text. Users can request broader revisions conversationally before generating the project.
Selecting “Generate Video” transfers the content into Camtasia Online, where creators can make final adjustments including transitions, animations, branding, annotations, captions and voiceover options before sharing the completed instructional video through a link.
The approach could simplify the creation of software training, employee onboarding materials, product demonstrations, support documentation and other instructional content that traditionally requires screen recording and extensive manual editing.
It also creates an alternative for situations where recording a live workflow is impractical. A creator can instead provide a sequence of screenshots and allow Camtasia’s AI to interpret those images and construct the initial instructional narrative.
Camtasia is positioning the technology as an AI-assisted workflow rather than a fully automated video generator. Users can continue modifying individual scenes and presentation elements after the initial AI-generated version is created.
That emphasis on iteration addresses one of the limitations TechSmith sees in current generative video systems, where users can sometimes produce an initial result quickly but have less control over making targeted changes afterward.
The ChatGPT plugin is available at no charge to users with TechSmith and ChatGPT accounts, although image usage and generation frequency depend on the limits associated with individual ChatGPT plans.
The launch extends the broader Camtasia Product Suite, which includes Camtasia Editor, Camtasia Snagit, Camtasia Audiate, Camtasia Online and Screencast. TechSmith positions the suite around screen recording, image capture, video editing and audio editing for workplace and educational content.
The company said Camtasia products are used by more than 73 million people globally, including users across all Fortune 500 companies.
By bringing Camtasia directly into ChatGPT, TechSmith is attempting to reduce the number of steps required to move from instructional idea to finished video while retaining the editing capabilities needed for professional training and business content.
