VideoLabs has acquired a global portfolio of 332 patent assets representing 89 patent families from Ericsson, adding intellectual property covering foundational technologies used across cloud infrastructure, software-defined networking, data centers, and cybersecurity.
The portfolio was acquired through VideoLabs’ newly formed subsidiary Certitude Networks.
Ericsson developed the technologies over more than two decades of research and development focused on the transition from fixed-function networking hardware toward virtualized and cloud-native infrastructure.
The portfolio includes patents covering software-defined networking, programmable network control, network function virtualization, service chaining and cloud and data-center resource orchestration.
Other technologies include storage provisioning, data replication, container virtualization and security, network performance monitoring, traffic engineering, load balancing and quality-of-service management.
The cybersecurity portion of the portfolio includes inventions covering distributed denial-of-service defense, distributed attack detection, key management and secure isolation.
VideoLabs said the intellectual property is relevant to hyperscalers, cloud providers, networking companies, infrastructure vendors and cybersecurity businesses whose services depend on software-defined and cloud-native networking.
Certitude Networks plans to license the portfolio to companies building and operating global cloud and networking infrastructure.
VideoLabs specializes in patent licensing and intellectual property monetization.
The company’s licensing professionals have generated more than $10 billion in patent licensing revenue over their careers, according to VideoLabs.
For Ericsson, the transaction represents one component of a broader intellectual property monetization strategy.
Ericsson maintains a portfolio of more than 60,000 granted patents and uses multiple approaches to generate returns from its research, including licensing and patent sales.
The Certitude acquisition gives VideoLabs a substantial collection of infrastructure patents that extends its licensing activities deeper into networking, cloud computing, and cybersecurity.
