VitVio, a Boston-based medical technology company using AI, computer vision, and ambient sensing to improve operating room efficiency, has raised $8 million in an oversubscribed seed round. The funding was led by Bek Ventures (formerly Earlybird Digital East), with participation from existing backers LDV Capital and Tiny Supercomputer Investment Company, and new investors Balnord, Thornapple River Capital, healthcare leader Joe Mullings, and Mati Staniszewski, founder of ElevenLabs. This funding round brings VitVio’s total funding to $10 million and will support the company’s expansion across major U.S. hospitals.
VitVio’s platform autonomously coordinates surgical teams, flags workflow delays, and reduces the administrative burden on hospital staff by digitizing and analyzing real-time activity inside the operating room. Using computer vision and AI-driven ambient sensing, the system creates a 3D, real-time understanding of what is happening in the OR—tracking who is doing what, when, and where—while protecting patient privacy with end-to-end encryption and anonymization at the point of data capture.
The company’s platform automates critical yet time-consuming administrative tasks, including logging surgical phases such as patient arrival and wound closure, managing staff coordination, and predicting case completion times. When deviations occur, the system issues dynamic alerts and provides real-time insights into utilization, scheduling, and performance. Hospitals can access these insights through a secure dashboard integrated with their information systems, allowing them to optimize OR capacity, reduce costs, and enhance scheduling precision.
Operating rooms are the financial center of hospital operations, representing nearly 40% of expenses and up to 60% of total revenue. However, inefficiencies in scheduling and resource allocation are estimated to cost U.S. hospitals $50 billion annually. By addressing these inefficiencies, VitVio aims to deliver measurable improvements in both operational performance and financial outcomes while alleviating the workload on medical staff.
VitVio was founded by a team of seasoned technologists with backgrounds in AI, IoT, and large-scale automation. The leadership team includes Thomas Knox (CEO), Dr. Peter Rennert (CTO), Maks Kozarzewski (COO), and Aleks Pajewski (CPO), who have previously contributed to global deployments for companies such as Aldi, Walmart, Dollar General, and Carrefour through innovations at Kiwi.com, Hyperloop, AiFi, Standard AI, and VusionGroup.
The new funding will enable VitVio to accelerate its commercialization efforts, expand its engineering and operations teams, and deploy its technology to a growing number of hospitals nationwide. As healthcare systems face mounting pressures from staff shortages and rising costs, the company’s AI-powered automation offers a timely solution to improve efficiency, reduce burnout, and allow clinicians to refocus on patient care.
KEY QUOTES:
“We backed VitVio at pre-seed and came back for the seed for one reason: we’re seeing measurable differences in how operating rooms actually run with this technology. This isn’t theoretical AI; it’s operationally impactful technology that pays for itself. We’re confident VitVio will be one of the companies that defines AI’s role in the OR.”
Cem Sertoglu, Managing Partner, Bek Ventures
“As early believers in VitVio’s AI-driven platform to enhance operating room efficiency, we at LDV Capital are thrilled to lead their pre-seed and invest in their seed round. Their real-time technology will help hospitals boost ROI and enable clinicians to focus on patient care.”
Evan Nisselson, Founder and General Partner, LDV Capital
“Having been in the industry for over three decades, I know that while tech is important, it’s the team behind it that truly drives success – and this team has what it takes. VitVio is using AI to revolutionize how ORs function, and it’s clear they’re building something that could change the game in healthcare.”
Joe Mullings, Healthcare Thought Leader and Investor
“Hospitals everywhere are under immense pressure – escalating expenses, demographic shifts, and ongoing staffing constraints are stretching systems to the limit. VitVio gives hospitals a way out of that cycle. By automating the administrative load that drains time and margin, we help clinicians focus on patients and help hospitals operate sustainably.”
Thomas Knox, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer, VitVio
