Vivo Capital Appoints Neetesh Kumar Managing Partner To Co-Lead U.S. Healthcare Private Equity And Establish New York Presence

Vivo Capital has appointed Neetesh Kumar as Managing Partner as the approximately $7 billion healthcare investment firm expands its U.S. buyout and private equity strategy and establishes a presence in New York.

Kumar will co-lead Vivo’s buyout and private equity investment strategy with a particular focus on the U.S. market. His appointment adds more than 30 years of experience across private equity, growth equity, venture capital and credit to the firm’s senior investment team.

The move is also significant for Vivo’s geographic expansion. The healthcare specialist is headquartered in Palo Alto and maintains offices in Asia, while Kumar will help build its New York presence closer to a significant concentration of private equity firms, institutional investors, healthcare companies and financial institutions.

Kumar has a background spanning both investing and technology. Vivo said his engineering and computer science foundation, combined with his investment experience, gives him particular expertise at the intersection of healthcare, technology and artificial intelligence.

That combination is increasingly relevant as AI changes pharmaceutical development, healthcare services, supply chains and operating models throughout the industry.

Kumar joins Vivo from Spruceview Capital Partners, where he was a Partner and later Adviser and led private-market investments involving responsibility for more than $4 billion of assets.

His previous roles include senior investment positions at J.P. Morgan Chase Retirement Plan, Rho Fund Investors and University of California Investments, along with growth-buyout firms One Equity and Banc One Capital Partners.

Before moving deeply into investing, Kumar worked in technology, including as a founding team member at Vetri Systems and as a manager at Andersen Consulting, now Accenture. He holds an MBA from the University of Chicago and an MS in Computer Science from Wayne State University and has completed MIT coursework covering AI in pharma and biotech and cell-therapy biomanufacturing.

Founded in 1996, Vivo operates across venture capital, growth equity, buyouts and public equities. The firm manages approximately $7 billion across its strategies and affiliated funds and has invested in more than 460 public and private companies spanning biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, medical devices and healthcare services.
