- Volkswagen’s CARIAD operations are going to source chips from Qualcomm (NASDAQ: QCOM). These are the details.
Volkswagen’s CARIAD operations said it is going to source chips from Qualcomm (NASDAQ: QCOM) in order to develop autonomous driving software. Qualcomm is going to supply system-on-chips (SoCs) for CARIAD’s platform, which has a goal of enabling automated driving up to Level 4 standards. Level 4 involves the vehicle handling all aspects of driving in most environments without human intervention.
“We will get system-on-chips (SoCs) designed to enable assisted and automated driving functions up to Level 4 from Qualcomm, an expert in chip design with over 140,000 patents,” wrote Volkswagen Chief Executive Herbert Diess in a LinkedIn post via Reuters. “The chips of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Ride portfolio will be used in all Group vehicles with the unified Cariad Software generation starting in the middle of the decade.”
Volkswagen also has plans to expand on its existing partnership with Intel’s MobilEye.
