Voya Energy has raised $35 million in Series A funding and unveiled an aluminum-based metal fuel system designed to provide large-scale electricity without combustion or dependence on the utility grid.
Energy Impact Partners led the financing, with participation from John Doerr, Mantis VC, StepStone, Founders Fund, Overmatch and Seven Stars.
Voya converts low-grade scrap aluminum directly into electricity using a low-temperature electrochemical process.
The company’s industrial design is expected to deliver up to two megawatts from a standard 20-foot container.
At larger scale, Voya is targeting approximately 100 MW of generation capacity and 10 gigawatt-hours of stored energy per acre.
The company said that would make its system approximately four times more compact than diesel generator fleets and 100 times more compact than grid-scale battery installations.
Voya plans initial deployments in 2027 and manufacturing scale-up in 2028.
Nearly a dozen companies across data centers, industrial operations, transportation, utilities and infrastructure are working with Voya on pilot demonstrations.
KEY QUOTE:
“Voya is taking a bold approach to that challenge, turning abundant aluminum into a practical source of 24/7 power wherever it is needed.”
