Walmart Inc (NYSE: WMT) announced it will be hiring 50,000 more workers across its retail stores, clubs, and distribution stores in order to meet high demands for groceries and household essentials during the coronavirus outbreak.

And Walmart achieved its target of hiring 150,000 workers ahead of schedule by bringing in 5,000 people per day on average.

To make the hires, Walmart worked with over 70 companies that furloughed workers due to the pandemic. Many of these workers came from the restaurant and hospitality industries. About 85% of the workers being hired are going into temporary or part-time roles.

Walmart also said it will now require its U.S. staff to wear masks or face coverings while at work. Previously, this policy was optional.

“This includes our stores, clubs, distribution and fulfillment centers as well as in our corporate offices”, Walmart U.S. President John Furner said in a memo via Reuters.

Plus Walmart is also extending its emergency leave policy through the end of May.

Walmart is not the only retail giant that is hiring tens of thousands of people. Kroger, Target, and Amazon are all ramping up hiring.
