Walmart Inc (NYSE: WMT) has named former Target senior vice president William White as its chief marketing officer (CMO). This announcement comes after an 8-month period without a CMO. White will be succeeding Barbara Messing — who stepped down in August 2019.

White spent about seven years at Target where he worked on sales and brand strategies. Prior to working at Target, White also held leadership positions at The Coca-Cola Company for almost a decade. Before that, he was a media planner and buyer for Starcom MediaVest.

An email announcement was sent to the retail giant’s U.S. employees from Walmart EVP & Chief Customer Officer Janey Whiteside. Whiteside also credited Walmart’s Interim Chief Marketing Officer Rich Lehrfeld for his leadership of the group while the company was searching for another CMO.

“William is a customer-centric, innovative marketer and is a passionate leader who loves to build and nurture teams,” wrote Whiteside in the email. “I am so excited to see him join the Walmart family and drive us forward.”

White is going to start the new role on May 11.
