Watson’s, one of the nation’s largest retailers of home recreational products and furnishings, announced the acquisition of Charlotte-based Viridien Patio + Fireplace, a leading destination in the Carolinas for high-end outdoor furniture, outdoor kitchens, fireplace, and hearth products.
The acquisition strengthens Watson’s presence across the Southern U.S., following its 2024 acquisition of Fort Myers, Florida-based Recreational Warehouse. The addition of Viridien’s four locations in Charlotte, Lake Norman, Raleigh, and Greenville increases Watson’s total store count to 39 locations. Following the transaction, Watson’s will operate 23 corporate locations along with 16 franchise and affiliate locations.
Founded in 1968, Watson’s has grown from a Cincinnati pool store into a major retailer of outdoor furniture, pools, spas, saunas, billiards, and indoor furnishings. The company said the Viridien acquisition further expands its leadership position in the outdoor furnishings category while supporting broader nationwide growth ambitions.
Following the acquisition, Viridien will continue operating as a wholly owned subsidiary under the brand name “Viridien by Watson’s.” The companies said customers can expect continuity in product selection, customer service, and overall retail experience.
Watson’s CEO Erik Mueller said the Carolinas market has long been a strategic priority for the company due to its economic growth and expanding consumer base. Mueller added that the transaction aligns well with Watson’s long-term expansion strategy and creates opportunities to broaden product offerings and deepen the company’s regional presence.
Viridien Owner and President Grant W. Henegan said Watson’s was selected because of its family-business culture, reputation, and alignment with Viridien’s long-standing values centered on employees, customers, vendor relationships, and long-term business stewardship.
Watson’s also said it continues to evaluate additional growth opportunities across the U.S. through both new store development and strategic acquisitions.
Cincinnati-based partners Katz Teller and Clark Schaefer Hackett, along with Charlotte-based Stump & Company, assisted in the transaction. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“Watson’s is a family business with a strong culture, an outstanding reputation, and values that closely align with our own. From the beginning, it was important to me to find a partner that truly understood what Viridien has been built on over the past 45 years – taking care of our employees, customers, and vendor partners while always operating with integrity and a long-term perspective. I genuinely don’t believe we could have found a better home for our business. This partnership creates exciting opportunities for growth while allowing us to preserve the culture, service, and relationships that have defined Viridien for decades.”
