WeVideo offers a dynamic and all-in-one platform for interactive video learning. The company’s solution seamlessly integrates video creation with layered learning experiences, creating an immersive and engaging environment for students to learn at their own pace. Pulse 2.0 interviewed WeVideo chief executive officer Kevin Knight to learn more about the company.
Kevin Knight’s Background
Knight has held various roles in the technology industry over the past 30 years. He shared:
“My first experience in edtech was with Blackbaud, whose main focus is on nonprofits, with its two largest verticals being K-12 and higher education. Blackbaud was a series of firsts for me. In addition to it being my first time working in edtech, I was also the company’s first Customer Success hire (before anyone really knew what CS was) and, down the road, I was one of their first General Managers, overseeing several different verticals. I spent 18 years with the company as we transitioned from private to public, old school CD-ROM implementation to cloud-based, and 600 employees to 4,000.”
“After Blackbaud, I joined Anthology, a global edtech company focused on higher education, as Chief Operating Officer and continued to hone my passion for products and tools that support diverse learning environments. This led me to WeVideo, where I now serve as the Chief Executive Officer.”
Core Products
What are WeVideo’s core products and features? Knight explained:
“WeVideo is a cloud-based multimedia creation platform. We offer full-scale video editing, screen & webcam recording, and powerful interactivity tools. While video editing and screen recording have been flagship WeVideo products, interactivity is our newest offering, stemming from our 2022 acquisition of PlayPosit, an interactive video company servicing K-12, higher ed, and corporate customers.”
“With interactivity, users can layer dynamic elements (like multiple choice questions, free responses, polls, etc.) into their videos, making them more engaging and improving overall content retention.”
Evolution Of WeVideo’s Technology
How has WeVideo’s technology evolved since launching? Knight noted:
“I think the key evolution has been from pure video editing into a collaborative multimedia creation platform. Educators and learners use WeVideo to create all forms of multimedia, including videos, GIFs, podcasts, presentations, slideshows, etc. Our K-12 product fosters collaborative classroom environments, offering the organizational, real-time collaboration, and lesson planning tools that educators and learners need to be successful. The new interactivity component of WeVideo strengthens our K-12 offering, enabling educators to create dynamic interactive assessments for their learners or for educator-led professional development.”
Significant Milestones
What have been some of WeVideo’s most significant milestones? Knight elaborated:
“The WeVideo team was very agile during the pandemic, delivering an organized, collaborative workspace for educators and learners working from home. This ‘Classroom’ environment has evolved ever since, offering educators a robust set of tools for introducing multimedia creation into their curricula.”
“Our more recent introduction of interactivity has further enhanced the teaching and learning experience. Not only do these tools help educators create more engaging content, they also provide real-time analytics on the backend that allows for performance and behavioral-based assessment.”
Customer Success Stories
After asking Knight about customer success stories, he highlighted:
“Of course! Our most recent collaboration with Virginia Beach Public Schools demonstrates how the district uses WeVideo and PlayPosit to scale instructional content, support project-based learning, and build students’ soft skills. You can watch (and read) the full story here.
Differentiation From The Competition
What differentiates the company from its competition? Knight affirmed:
“A couple of things come to mind. First, the interactive component that I’ve discussed. We’re not just multimedia creation but an end-to-end platform for creation, engagement, and assessment. That latter part is so important. There’s plenty of research to suggest that learners benefit from video content, but educators need to be able to assess their learners. Adding interactive elements that, in turn, provide educators with real-time data is one way to solve this. There are companies focused on education, and companies focused on interactivity, but not too many that do both.”
Future Company Goals
What are some of WeVideo’s future goals? Knight concluded:
“Our goal is to put WeVideo’s platform into the hands of as many people as possible. We want to be a global leader in video learning. We’re constantly evaluating our product to make sure it’s intuitive and easy to use. Additionally, we want to meet the world where it is, which means looking for opportunities to incorporate generative AI. Expect more on this in the coming year.”
“The great thing about video creation is that anyone can do it. Our job? Lower the barriers to entry and empower everyone to be creators.”
