WilmerHale announced that Hugh Murtagh has joined the firm as a partner and chair of its transactional Bankruptcy and Financial Restructuring Practice in New York. Murtagh advises companies, creditors, sponsors, financing sources, purchasers, and other stakeholders throughout the restructuring process.

His practice includes consensual refinancings, out-of-court workouts, liability management transactions, Chapter 11 proceedings, cross-border insolvencies, creditor enforcement matters, and alternative wind-downs.

He also advises boards and senior management teams of financially distressed companies on fiduciary duties, corporate governance, litigation exposure, and risk management.

WilmerHale said Murtagh’s experience will complement its existing bankruptcy litigation, finance, corporate, and regulatory capabilities.

The hire is part of a broader expansion of WilmerHale’s Transactional Department during 2026.

Other recent additions include partners across sports and gaming, mergers and acquisitions, tax, national security, international arbitration, securities litigation, and commercial disputes.

Before entering private practice, Murtagh clerked for Judge P. Kevin Castel of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York.

He earned his law degree magna cum laude from New York University School of Law and his undergraduate degree from Yale University.
