X12 acquired the CORE Operating Rules and Certification Program from DataSpring, powered by CAQH, bringing the healthcare programs under X12’s governance framework. And X12 is an ANSI-accredited standards development organization whose standards underpin healthcare administrative data exchange.

The acquisition gives X12 ownership, administration, and ongoing management responsibility for the CORE Operating Rules and Certification Program.

The programs are designed to improve automation, reduce administrative burden, and increase consistency across the healthcare ecosystem.

X12 and DataSpring plan to coordinate throughout the transition to minimize disruption for organizations that currently use or participate in the programs.

Organizations will continue to have access to operating rules, certification resources, and implementation guidance during the transition.

The CORE Certification Program will continue operating without interruption.

Participating organizations will remain able to complete testing, renew certifications, and demonstrate compliance with federally mandated operating rules.

X12 said it intends to preserve the certification program’s integrity and transparency while evaluating future enhancements based on industry requirements.

The transition also consolidates responsibility for operating rules and administrative standards within a single organization.

X12 expects that structure to improve coordination as the healthcare industry advances interoperability and considers updates to HIPAA transaction standards.

The organization said bringing the programs together should provide greater clarity for implementers and support longer-term consistency across administrative simplification initiatives.

X12 has been chartered by the American National Standards Institute for more than 40 years.

Its standards span healthcare, insurance, transportation, finance, government, supply chain, and other industries.

The organization has published more than 320 transaction sets, approximately 1,400 data elements, and more than 40,000 codes used across business-to-business processes.
