XLerateHealth Awarded $2.5 Million NIH Grant To Expand Life Sciences Commercialization Platform

XLerateHealth has been awarded the first phase of a $2.5 million Phase IIB Small Business Innovation Research grant from the National Institutes of Health to expand its commercialization platform nationally.

The award was made through the NIH IDeA Regional Entrepreneurship Development program and will support XLerateHealth’s enterprise commercialization platform and I-RED life sciences product suite.

Louisville-based XLerateHealth helps universities, biotech hubs, health systems and other organizations move early-stage healthcare and life sciences discoveries from research environments toward commercialization.

The company plans to use the funding to expand its software architecture, specialized commercialization curriculum, AI-augmented tools and marketplace of industry experts.

The platform is designed for university technology transfer offices, federally funded biotech and innovation hubs, state-supported entrepreneurial service organizations and health systems.

Organizations can use XLerateHealth to operate fully managed commercialization programs or license the company’s software platform and run programs using their own teams.

The Phase IIB project follows an earlier Phase II pilot involving 17 academic innovators across 10 universities in the NIH Southeast IDeA States region.

During a 22-month evaluation period, participating startups raised $20.46 million in follow-on capital through grants and seed investment.

XLerateHealth also reported a 46% success rate on awarded SBIR/STTR applications, 53% advancement toward executed technology licensing agreements and a 35% increase in new patent filings among participants.

Founded in 2012, XLerateHealth has worked with more than 600 companies. Its core portfolio includes 147 companies that have collectively raised more than $2.1 billion and generated 14 exits.

KEY QUOTES:

“Taking a biotech or life science discovery from the lab to market is notoriously difficult; founders must navigate a daunting maze of regulatory approvals, reimbursement pathways, and specialized talent needs to build a validated, scalable, commercially successful business. Our enterprise platform provides institutional partners a turnkey toolkit to help their startups overcome these hurdles.”

Jacqueline Willmot, CEO and Co-Founder of XLerateHealth

“Billions of dollars go into early-stage biomedical research, yet the real friction occurs when turning that capital into market-ready companies. Institutional leaders need scalable systems that de-risk regulatory, reimbursement, and go-to-market execution long before taking on venture capital. XLerateHealth’s platform provides that enterprise-grade toolkit, helping institutional partners scale high-impact life science innovations from within their ecosystems.”
