Xscape Photonics: $37 Million Raised To Advance Multi-Wavelength Photonics For AI Data Center Networks

Xscape Photonics announced $37 million in new funding, bringing the semiconductor startup’s total Series A investment to $81 million as it accelerates development of photonic technologies designed to support next-generation AI data center infrastructure.

The round was led by Addition and included continued backing from existing investors, including IAG Capital Partners and NVIDIA. The new capital doubles the company’s valuation and will help advance its multi-color wavelength-division multiplexing platform aimed at removing networking bottlenecks in large AI clusters.

Founded in 2022 by a team of photonics researchers from Columbia University, Xscape Photonics is developing optical technologies intended to improve how data moves within AI data centers. The company’s approach focuses on enabling much higher bandwidth and efficiency compared with conventional copper-based interconnects, which increasingly limit performance as AI clusters grow in scale.

Alongside the funding announcement, the company unveiled FalconX, a pluggable external laser module capable of emitting up to eight wavelengths simultaneously. The device is built using Xscape’s proprietary CombX laser technology and is intended to support ultra-high-bandwidth optical networking within AI clusters.

The FalconX system generates more than 1 watt of optical power and enables multi-terabit-per-second data transmission. By producing multiple colors of light from a single module, the technology supports wavelength-division multiplexing, enabling several data streams to travel simultaneously over the same optical infrastructure.

The company says the architecture helps address “escape bandwidth,” a key limitation in modern AI clusters where accelerators struggle to exchange data quickly enough with neighboring GPUs or memory systems. FalconX is designed with built-in redundancy and reliability features to meet the stringent uptime requirements of hyperscale data center environments.

FalconX is also engineered to comply with industry standards for scale-up and scale-out fabric links, allowing hyperscale operators to integrate the module into existing infrastructure.

The new laser module represents a milestone in Xscape Photonics’ broader ChromX platform roadmap, which aims to dramatically expand the number of optical wavelengths available for AI networking. The company plans to scale its photonics platform to generate 16, 32 and eventually more than 128 wavelengths of light, significantly increasing the data-carrying capacity of AI data center networks.

In 2025, the company demonstrated a 16-color CombX prototype developed in collaboration with Tower Semiconductor and also introduced the EagleX Laser Evaluation Kit to support development of ChromX-based systems.

Xscape Photonics says its long-term goal is to create programmable multi-wavelength photonics fabrics that allow AI data centers to operate more like unified computing systems, where GPUs across entire clusters can exchange information as if they were part of a single machine.

Since its founding, the company has raised nearly $95 million in total funding and continues to expand its engineering and development teams to support the commercialization of its photonics platform.
