Zadara: This IaaS Company Simplifies Cloud Operational Complexity In A $482 Billion Market

By Amit Chowdhry • Sep 28, 2023

Zadara, the company behind the Edge Cloud Platform, simplifies operational complexity through automated end-to-end infrastructure provisioning of compute, storage, and network resources. To learn more, Pulse 2.0 interviewed Zadara President and CEO Yoram Novick.

Yoram Novick’s Background

Yoram Novick

Novick has deep expertise in enterprise systems, storage, and infrastructure software. Novick said:

“I have been building successful startups for over 20 years. Previously, I was the founder and CEO of 2 technology startups; Topio, a data replication and recovery company that was eventually acquired by NetApp and Maxta, a hyperconvergence software company. I also served on the boards of several technology companies. I hold over 30 patents in the systems, storage, and cloud domains.”

“Zadara did very well growing from a small team with a great vision to a company that serves many customers via hundreds of service providers. I look forward to leading Zadara into its next growth phase – that is, continuing to build and expand the world’s largest Edge Cloud.”

“The Zadara team, partners, customers, and prospects have all been great during my transition to CEO. I look forward to getting to know and working closely with all of the people at Zadara and its ecosystem that has brought the company to support 500 cloud instances worldwide.”

Novick became the head of the company in April of this year. And Novick has known the Zadara founders for more than 25 years and has always had a lot of respect for them.

“We all founded companies at the same time. Circa 2000, Zadara’s former CEO, now CTO Nelson Nahum, Eli Shapira, and Robi Hartman founded StoreAge, while I and three great engineers from IBM founded Topio. I stayed in touch with Nelson over the years while we built several technology companies and faced similar challenges. He called me early in the year and asked me what I thought about taking on the CEO role at Zadara. The rest is (recent) history,” Novick added.

Favorite Memory

What has been Novick’s favorite memory working for Zadara so far?

“I have only been here briefly, so it is too early to collect many memories. That said, I have great memories from a long meeting with one of our partners who has been working with Zadara for many years. During the meeting, we found that many years ago, we both worked on an ambitious project that attempted to do what Zadara is doing today, albeit on a small scale in a world that predated the cloud or even the pervasive deployment of distributed computing in large enterprises,” Novick reflected.

Core Products

What are Zadara’s core products and features? Novick explained:

“Zadara is a cloud company delivering Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS). Zadara’s Edge Cloud Platform (ZEC) simplifies cloud operational complexity through automated, end-to-end provisioning of compute, storage and network resources. We provide a comprehensive service consisting of hardware, software, services, and support with a consumption-based pricing model. Our customers do not have to purchase any hardware or software and are paying only for the services that they consume. We support cloud services wherever applications live – on-premises, in the cloud, or in a preferred co-location. We operate over 500 globally distributed cloud instances supported by a world-class team of IT experts providing follow-the-sun services and support.”

Total Addressable Market

What total addressable market size is Zadara pursuing? Novick assessed:

“The Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) market size is projected to reach $482 billion by 2030, growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 25.35%. Cloud is everywhere and the market is expected to continue growing at a healthy rate for the foreseeable future.”

Differentiation From The Competition

Commenting on the differentiation from the competition, Novick replied:

“All existing IaaS vendors are employing a centralized approach. They are utilizing a small number of very large data centers. Zadara, on the other hand, is employing a distributed approach. Zadara has by far more cloud instances than any other vendor. ZEC is leveraging all these cloud instances to create a global Edge Cloud. It enables cloud services on-premises, in the cloud, or in a preferred co-location, a flexibility that no other vendor promises. We also created a Federated Edge Cloud on top of ZEC to enable managed service providers to instantly scale their businesses without any investment or risk by utilizing the resources of other managed service providers. We empower MSPs and enterprise customers to grow fast with a consumption-based pricing model to minimize their financial risk. Our partners and customers can scale up and down according to demand.”

Future Company Goals

What are some of Zadara’s future company goals? Novick concluded:

“Zadara is looking to grow its business while becoming and staying profitable. While there is a tradeoff between these two goals, we are planning to maintain a balanced approach to achieve both, For the long term, our goal is to solidify and strengthen our position as the largest Edge Cloud in the world and enable the distributed cloud approach to significantly grow faster than the overall IaaS market. Check-in with us again next year.”
