Zurich has selected Alex Wells as CEO of Zurich U.S., promoting the veteran commercial insurance executive after he helped generate double-digit growth in the insurer’s Middle Market business. Wells takes over following the departure of Sierra Signorelli and will lead Zurich’s U.S. operations effective immediately, subject to customary approvals.
He previously served as President of Zurich U.S. Middle Market, Programs, Captives and Direct Markets, businesses that collectively comprise Zurich U.S.’s largest operating group. Wells also served on the Zurich U.S. Executive Committee.
Wells brings more than 25 years of commercial insurance experience and has led Zurich’s U.S. Middle Market operation for the past six years. Before joining Zurich in 2020, he held senior roles at Chubb and ACE.
Under Wells’ leadership, Zurich said its Middle Market business achieved double-digit growth while expanding underwriting and risk-engineering talent, strengthening local-market capabilities and introducing additional specialized risk solutions and broker tools.
His promotion provides Zurich with leadership continuity while placing an executive with experience across global accounts, midmarket customers, wholesale casualty, specialty insurance and multiple distribution models at the top of the U.S. business.
Pending final approvals, Wells will operate from Zurich U.S.’s headquarters in Schaumburg, Illinois.
Zurich said a replacement to lead its U.S. Middle Market business will be announced separately.
The appointment comes as commercial insurers continue navigating changing risk exposures, evolving broker relationships and increasingly specialized customer demands. Wells’ experience across underwriting, distribution and risk engineering gives Zurich an internal successor with direct familiarity with the company’s U.S. strategy.
