LivingSocial Raises $14 Million Series C, Challenging Groupon

This morning I went on YouTube.com and saw a huge banner at the top that features LivingSocial.com’s Daily Deal in the city of Detroit. If you go to LivingSocial.com right now, it will show you how their daily deals work — for me the website says “We’re coming soon to Ann Arbor.” I actually had no idea that LivingSocial was planning to compete with Groupon.com. And they have raised $14 million in Series C to do so.

Jon Stewart Gives His Take On iPhone and Gizmodo Saga [FUNNY VIDEO]

Last night The Daily Show with Jon Stewart decided to give his take on the Gizmodo/iPhone 4G story. “I’m sorry but this whole thing is out of control,” said Jon Stewart as an image that said Appholes hovered over his head. Cut to the video of the 1984 Apple commercial, “LOOK IN THE MIRROR MAN!” said Stewart in response to the way Apple and the police handled the situation.

iPhone Caught Being Used For iPad Controller [VIDEO]

The iPhone and iPad seem to be playing along nicely. In this video you will see a person using their iPhone as a controller for the game Chopper 2 on the iPad using Bluetooth. Chopper 2 will be available this summer.

AT&T To Delay Tethering Due To Network Performance Concerns

AT&T plans to delay Internet tethering on the iPhone because high traffic uses on mobile devices could hamper network performance. Tethering is the ability for a mobile device to act as an Internet service provider for a laptop or desktop computer. Below is a statement that Engadget received from AT&T:
iPhone tethering has the potential to exponentially increase traffic, and we need to ensure that we’re able to deliver excellent performance for the feature ? over and above the increases in data traffic we’re already seeing before we will offer the feature. [Engadget]
HP ACQUIRES PALM FOR $1.2 BILLION

I feel like slapping myself for not buying stock in Palm because HP just announced that they are acquiring them for $1.2 billion. After the Palm Pre and the Palm Pixi struggled to compete in the smartphone market, the fate of webOS was unclear.

40 Current and Former Infinity Ward Developers Suing Activision For $500 Million

About 40 past and current Infinity Ward developers are suing the company because of breach of contract and unpaid royalties for the game Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. The class action lawsuit seeks $500 million from Activision’s Infinity Ward over unpaid bonuses, profit sharing, punitive damages and future profits from future games including Modern Warfare 3. The payments were withheld to prevent employees from leaving Activision.

Microsoft and HTC Partner On Patents

Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) and HTC Corporation has signed a patent agreement that will provide broad coverage of Microsoft’s existing patent portfolio and HTC’s mobile phones that run on Android. Microsoft will receive royalties from HTC Corporation through the partnership. The agreement also expands upon HTC’s business relationship with Microsoft.

Digital Sky Technologies Acquires ICQ For $187.5 Million



In June 1998, AOL acquired Mirabilis Ltd. for $287 million. Mirabilis is the company behind messaging software ICQ. Now ICQ is being passed on to another buyer, Digital Sky Technologies. DST paid AOL $187.5 million to take ICQ off their hands. DST is a Russian investment company and ICQ is the most popular messaging service in Russia.

Apple Acquires Mobile Virtual Assistant App Company Siri

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) has acquired virtual assistant mobile application company Siri. Siri is essentially a “getting-things-done” application. You just press the green button that says “Say It” and it brings up a solution to your problem. For example, if you say “I’m looking for an Italian restaurant in San Jose,” the application will pull up information about the Italian restaurants in that area. You can also say you are looking for a table for two and it will use OpenTable to confirm a reservation.
