Facebook has hired Eventbrite’s chief marketing officer Brian Irving as the global head of its marketing for augmented and virtual reality products. Prior to joining Facebook in March, Irving is going to take time off to spend time with family.

Irving is going to report to Facebook chief marketing officer of AR/VR Rebecca Van Dyck. According to Adweek, this role is not a new one. However, he is not replacing anyone.

Irving joined Eventbrite in January 2018 as the chief brand officer. In June 2019, his role expanded to the chief marketing officer role. Before that, he worked as the chief marketing & revenue officer at Hampton Creek and the global marketing director at Airbnb.  Plus he also worked as a senior director of marketing at Google and as a director of WW Marketing Communications at Apple.

In March 2014, Facebook bought Oculus VR for over $2 billion. And since then, Oculus released products like the Oculus Go, the Oculus Quest, and the Oculus Rift S. When Oculus released the Quest in September 2018, Zuckerberg said that it was part of a goal to reach one billion VR users.

Facebook is also working on a virtual reality world called Horizon. With Horizon, users design their own avatars from a wide variety of body options and styles. And from there, people can be transported from public spaces to new worlds featuring a number of adventures like Wing Strikers — which is a multiplayer aerial game.

Last year, it was revealed that Facebook was developing a voice assistant, which functions like Amazon Alexa, Apple Siri, and Google Assistant. Facebook director of AR/VR and Facebook Assistant Ira Snyder is overseeing these efforts out of the company’s offices in Bellevue, Washington and Menlo Park, California.

Irving will likely oversee certain aspects of the marketing and communications around the aforementioned initiatives at Facebook.
