  • Facebook recently unveiled its 2019 Diversity Report and announced a goal of doubling the hiring of women and minorities

Recently, Facebook released its 2019 Diversity Report and the company announced it is planning to double its female employees globally and the number of its Black and Hispanic employees. Facebook CMO Antonio Lucio will be overseeing this initiative.

“We are more focused than ever on creating a diverse workforce and supporting our people. They are the ones building better products and serving the communities on our platforms,” wrote Facebook’s Global Chief Diversity Officer Maxine Williams in a blog post. “(Lauryn (Hale) Ogbechie), Director of Education Partnerships, brings people together to learn more about computer science and programming through Facebook-led initiatives, such as TechPrep and CodeFwd, and partnerships with organizations like CodePath.org, the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) and historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs). (Jason Trimiew), Head of Supplier Diversity, ensures that our supply chain, from cafe produce to data center construction and global event production, is both diverse and inclusive.“

Ian Spalter — the Head of Design at Instagram — has been relying on diverse teams to build the best products throughout his career in the US and now in Japan. And Margaret Gould Stewart — the VP of product design at Facebook — is insisting on diverse perspectives and a broad view of social and political contexts informing how Facebook puts together design.

In the last few years, the majority of new female leaders were internally promoted. And since 2014, Facebook increased the number of Black women at the company by 25X and the number of Black men by 10X. And Facebook has been advancing the efforts with veterans by offering programs like a Military Skills Translator — which helps veterans navigate Facebook opportunities and a mentorship program through our Vets and Allies Facebook Resource Group. Now veterans make up 2.2% of the workforce.

“Our commitment to and support of the LGBTQ+ community is unwavering. We’re proud to have earned 100% on the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) 2019 Corporate Equality Index (CEI) and the designation as a Best Place to Work for LGBTQ+ Equality. This is the fifth year in a row that we have received the best score. The HRC recognition reflects the hard work that this community and its allies across the company do to make LGBTQ+ inclusion a priority for the people at Facebook and on our platform around the world. About 8% of US-based Facebook employees identify as LGBTQ+, based on a voluntary survey,” added Williams.

Currently, Facebook’s workforce is 63.1% male and 36.9% female. In terms of senior leadership, Facebook’s workforce is 32.6% female and 67.4% male. And in technical roles, Facebook’s workforce is 23% female and 77% male. Facebook’s US ethnicity makeup is 44.2% white, 43% Asian, 5.2% Hispanic, 3.8% Black, 3.1% of 2 or more, and 0.7% other.
