Google announced this past week that it is starting to open up access to Search Labs, which is a new program for accessing early experiments from the search giant. If you already signed up for the wait list at labs.google.com/search, then you will receive a notification via email when you can start testing it out.
The experiments currently include SGE (Search Generative Experience), Code Tips, and Add to Sheets in the U.S. To opt into the experiments, you just have to tap on the Labs icon in the latest version of the Google app for Android and iOS or on the Chrome desktop for signing up. Or you can also visit the Labs site to check the wait list status.
“Once you’re in, the new generative AI-powered Search experience will help you take some of the work out of searching, so you can understand a topic faster, uncover new viewpoints and insights, and get things done more easily. So instead of asking a series of questions and piecing together that information yourself, Search now can do some of that heavy lifting for you,” said Google in an announcement.
There are 3 ways you can make the next search simpler with new generative artificial intelligence capabilities:
1.) Get up to speed on new or complicated topics:
Perhaps you may start to map out a decision that you would typically need to break down into smaller parts such as learning the violin vs. the guitar. The search will provide an AI-powered snapshot so you would be able to gain an understanding of what factors to consider. Or you might be researching how to start your own company, then you can look up the “benefits of registering your business before freelancing.”
2.) Check out quick tips for specific questions
You might have a specific question such as: “How to get a coffee stain out of a cotton sweater?” Or you might be wondering “How can I quickly renew my passport?” These results would now show you pointers for key information that you need to know.
3.) Find a range of products to consider while shopping
You might be interested in buying some removable wallpaper for your rental property. You can do this by simply searching for “Peel and stick wallpaper for the bathroom” to learn about factors like whether it can be easy to remove. Or you can search for “Bluetooth speaker for the beach” to see factors like the IP rating and the battery life.
You can find more information by tapping on options like “ask a follow-up question.”
These experiments are Google’s first step in adding generative AI to Search.
“As we continue to reimagine how we can make it even more natural and intuitive to find what you’re looking for, we’re excited for you to test out these new capabilities and share feedback along the way,” Google added.
