Salt Lake City, Utah-based SmartBeat — a company building technology that represents a major break-through in infant monitoring technologies — announced it received a seed investment from Ideaship. What is Ideaship?  Ideaship, a collaboration between Global Technology Transfer Group (GTT Group) and Panasonic Intellectual Property Corporation of America, is a patent leveraged venture capital firm that provides patent development capital for early-stage startups.

SmartBeat’s technology can identify more than 16 million shades of color. And so it can detect movement too small to be seen by the human eye. The Smart Beat device can also check two million pixels for any changes in color. And by analyzing those changes, it can tell if there is movement, and whether that movement is breathing. With the Smart Beat device, all you have to do is put your baby in the crib, tap on the app to start monitoring, and then see the HD video feed with real-time breathing status and alerts.

“The Ideaship team has exceeded my expectations in every regard. They were able to marshall significant resources to assist us with our patent portfolio development at a key inflection point. They have been professional, proactive, and diligent in their efforts to protect our innovations,” said SmartBeat co-founder and CEO Nathan Ruben.

This funding round will be used to support SmartBeat’s efforts to engineer, manufacture, and deploy their infant monitoring solution to consumers nationwide.

“SmartBeat’s technology represents a major break-through in infant monitoring technologies. To be able to bring affordable infant monitoring technologies to the home is a central mission of Smart Beat and we are grateful to be part of the team. I have known Nate for several years, when he presented his idea at the 1 Million Cups event in Salt Lake City. He has made significant progress and has turned his idea into a product. Nate is passionate about monitoring breathing using a camera that is widely available. We are excited to invest in Nate, his company, and his idea,” added Ideaship Venture Partner Robert C. Bell.
