Today Samsung hosted a launched event in China about the Galaxy A9s and A6s smartphones. Plus the Korean electronics giant also teased a new handset that features a completely edge-to-edge display without a notch. Rumor has it that this device — which is expected to be called the Galaxy A8s — will launch alongside the potentially notch-free Galaxy S10 next year.
How would the front-facing camera work with an edge-to-edge display? Apparently, a hole will be drilled into the display for the front-facing camera according to well-known device leaker Ice Universe via BGR.
In Samsung’s teaser image (above via @MMDDJ_), it appears that there isn’t any obstruction on the display. So it seems like the camera may be under the display. And it may be possible that the camera portion of the camera would be turned off while viewing content in full-screen mode.
The Galaxy A8s likely will not arrive until early 2019. I suspect that the fingerprint scanner will remain on the back of the device when it releases.
When Apple added a notch to the iPhone X, Samsung launched a TV ad poking fun at it. And while other device makers have embraced the notch such as the Google Pixel 3, Samsung has been avoiding that design form. Samsung’s latest Galaxy S9 and S9+ flagship devices have thin bezels at the top to house the front-facing camera.
Once Samsung launches edge-to-edge devices without a notch, then it seems highly likely that other manufacturers will follow suit.
